Abstract: Cybersecurity Data Analytics is an emerging field of extreme importance, and is one integral part of the emerging Science of Cybersecurity. In this talk, I will discuss the research effort that we have initiated toward a systematic framework and understanding of Cybersecurity Data Analytics. As examples, I will report some of our results in analyzing cyber attack data collected by two kinds of cyber defense instruments: honeypots and telescopes. I will highlight the interesting phenomena that are found to be relevant in the cybersecurity domain for the first time, such as Long-Range Dependence (LRD). I will also discuss our initial results toward characterizing the predictability of cyber attacks. This talk is largely based on joint works with Zhenxin Zhan and Maochao Xu.

The Introduction of Shouhuai Xu Professor:

Shouhuai Xu is a full professor (effective in 9/2014) in the Department of Computer Science, University of Texas at San Antonio. His research is primarily in making cyberspace more secure and trustworthy. He is especially interested in mathematical modeling and analysis of macroscopic cybersecurity, and devising microscopic practical mechanisms including provably-secure cryptographic protocols to counter advanced cyber attacks (including malware). His research has been funded by AFOSR, ARO, NSF and ONR. He has served on the Program Committees of 70+ international conferences/workshops. He is currently an Associate Editor for IEEE TDSC and IEEE TIFS. He earned his PhD in Computer Science from Fudan University.
